Publishing One Billion Lines of Australian Health Data
The Australian government’s Department of Health has published a large dataset of de-identified Medicare and Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) claims of approximately 3 million people dating back to 1984 as open data. The billion-line dataset includes Medicare claims, such as visits to doctors and medical imaging services, and PBS subsidies for prescription medication. The Department of Health published the dataset to support analysis of how demand for health services has evolved over time, and it designed the dataset to be easily linked to future publications of health data, such as information about hospital intakes and immunization records.
